Pro Tip for This Project

The Cornstarch Secret

Thoroughly knead a small amount of cornstarch (about one teaspoon per 250g of clay) into your air dry clay before sculpting.

This reduces stickiness, prevents cracking as the clay dries, and allows for a smoother, more refined surface on your finished piece.

(Especially helpful for creating detailed miniatures, delicate jewelry, or pieces that require a very smooth finish.)

Inspiration & Mood

Before You Start

Mood boards are important because they visually capture the style, tone, and feeling of a project before you begin, helping you stay consistent and inspired. They act as a creative roadmap, guiding color choices, materials, and overall aesthetic. In short, they turn abstract ideas into a clear visual direction.

Natures Imprent Ornament

Materials

-A block of natural white air-dry clay

-A collection of fresh leaves with clear veins

-A small wooden rolling pin

-A 3-inch round cookie cutter

-A plastic drinking straw

-A sheet of parchment paper

Step 1

Take a palm-sized piece of clay and roll it out on the parchment paper until it's about a quarter-inch thick.

Step 2

Press a leaf firmly, vein-side down, into the center of the clay slab.

Step 3

Carefully peel the leaf off the clay, then use the round cookie cutter to cut out the imprinted section. Or leave it natural for a more organic look.

Step 4

Use a straw to carefully poke a hole in the top center edge of the clay circle.

Step 5

Smooth any rough edges with your finger and leave the ornament on the parchment paper to dry completely for 24-48 hours.

Final Product

And thats it! a clean minimal ornament. Now that you have the “know how” its time to make some more. Try different types of leaves, different shapes for the clay slab or maybe consider painting them an array of autumn colours.
